Next month will be the FragFest event for 2012!! Huray for LAN66!? Come 10am on February 4th the doors of St Marys Community Centre will fly open and enthusiastic gamers will flood in, hungry for the great day of LAN gaming to come. With the concerns of uni and school still weeks away, this is a great weekend to get your game on and pit your skills against the rest of the FragFest community.
Yes, Internet (via DSL!) is again working and tournament details are not yet available, but we already have a great prize pool and positive vibes on Facebook!... be sure to share us with your friends!
If you're interested in helping set up in the morning, put you name
down here
in the FF Forums. This you can become one of the awesome helpers
who make putting on FF Lans possible. We have also attached a prize to
these responsibilities, and in doing so have added a framework around

FragFest cordially invites PC gamers, LAN gamers and computing enthusiast to join us for 12 hour and 24+ hour events throughout 2012. For 2012 there will be six (6) events of which two (2) will be continuations of our overnight 'Frag-o-Thon' series. The other four (4) will be regular single day, 10am-10pm events. We hope that other events in NSW and Sydney will avoid these dates where possible, though we do not anticipate any concerns if these dates are also convenient for them.
Registration for the first Day and Frag-o-Thon events is already open! So you are able to register at your soonest convenience. Please add the following events to your personal calendar or feel free to syndicate these details to your website, blog etc. Also look out for notification of when registration opens...
The FragFest organisers are planning another great year and look forward to your company!

In 2012, FragFest are looking for volunteers to organise key features
of each event. This is on a per-event basis so that people can rotate
through portfolios, have a try at organising, then return to being a
guest, miss an event or two etc. Basically it will give people the
opportunity to commit to an event in an organising capacity, but without
any implied requirement to be 'staff' for years there after. They will
have an amazing chance to hone their skills, try out their fresh ideas,
meet new challenges and make new friends.
Check out the link below to the thread in the FragFest Forums. You can find there the list of positions, meeting schedule and how to apply
PhotoGame went really well at LanSixtyFive, so we're bringing it back for LAN66. If you are a keen photographer, this is your chance to take some great LAN photos and win a prize. But what is PhotoGame?? its our attempt to make a tournament for people with a knack (or just a love) of photography. We trialed it at FoT11 and LanSixtyFive. Both we are great success (Check out the photos). Basically, people take photos throughout the day and submit them for judging. Anyone at the event can jump on to the intranet server and vote for the best photo - its a competition of the people! Wher the winner walks away with some nice loot!
For LanSixtyFive we have written a nice intranet application so that people can easily upload their submissions, and rather than judging ourselves, everyone at the LAN can vote on their favourite photos! If you're curious you can check out the PhotoGame software on Github
Were bringing back (again) two timeless just-for-fun comps at Frag-o-Thon
11. Namely the competition for the cutest mascot and the best dressed!
A mascot is a cute little (emphasis on little) stuffed toy which stands
atop your case or monitor, guarding you whilst you play and bringing
you good fortune. Finally you have a use for those stuffed toys you win
in arcades or promotional give aways! We will be judging the cutest
mascot based on cuteness, old school pop-culture references,
originality, and effort. Best dressed is your chance to bring your
fatigues or pirate costume our of moth balls and don your after hours
alter ego whilst you pwn n00bz (own newbies). Best dressed will be
judged on effort, authenticity, pop-culture references and originality.
In both cases excessive cost and cross dressing wont provide an edge
over the competition! Prizes will go to first and second in both
categories. Check out the forums for more details!

First time to a LAN? Havent been for a while? Here's a guide to having a fun, enjoyable LAN specifically related to FragFest events.
What do I bring?
Things you'll probably want to bring with you are:
Additionally, we are happy to facilitate religious needs such as a quiet room for prayer as we recognise this is important for members of some religions.
Preparing your computer
Before the event, you should make sure you have all the games you wish to play installed and patched to the latest version so you can spend the least amount of time at the event setting them up and more time playing!
Steam (Counter-Strike, Half-Life, etc) can be rather troublesome at LANs so make sure that it is fully updated before the event and that it is working fine in offline mode (disconnect your internet, exit and reopen Steam and attempt to run your games) otherwise you may find that you will not be able to play them when you're there.
Setting up your network card to work with the FragFest network is really simple and is covered in a separate guide. However in summary, set everything to DHCP and turn of any internet sharing you may have enabled.
Rule of thumb for powerboards: if its rattling dont use it!
Just go down and buy a new 4 outlet powerboard for like $3 or something. Woolworths often has 2 packs for $5.
Then you have one for you and one for your mate for $2.50 each.
Tip: having your case open is also a bad idea.
Tip: People who LAN frequently, often have a whole separate set of cables for the lan.
For example, I unplug my monitor, sound, network and power.
Put my case and monitor in the car.
Then put my keyboard and mouse in my LAN bag and off i go.
I dont have to worry about massive amounts of clambering under desks replugging before and after.
Why not throw in a quick network question to keep your skills up?
Easy Question: Is the address 172.22.257.45 a valid IPv4 address? Why/Why Not?
RTFM Question: Does Gigabit Ethernet (copper) require a crossover cable when connecting switch to switch or pc to pc?
Ready now?
RTFM Question - No, as all wires are used to send AND recieve data simultaneously. Only 10-base-tx (ie 10Mbps Ethernet over Cat5) and 100-base-tx (ie Fast Ethernet, 100Mbps over Cat5) require a cross over cable. In fibre the send and recieve must always be crossed.
Easy Question - No its not, as IPv4 addresses are 32bits long and when represented in dotted decimal notation the maximum value per digit is 255.
